(CBCP) MANILA— The head of Manila’s Roman Catholic Church has reminded the faithful that mercy without action is useless.
Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle said mercy should not be left as “emotions” but should be seen in words and actions.
“Mercy is always accompanied by action. But action alone without mercy because sometimes meaningless,” Tagle said.
The works of mercy and how to put them into action will be the focus of the upcoming Philippine Conference on New Evangelization in Manila.
This will be the third time that the cardinal will host the event which he started in 2013 in an attempt to explore further the Catholics’ appreciation of mercy.
With the theme, “Awa, Unawa, Gawa: The Filipino Experience of Mercy,” the PCNE is scheduled from July 15 to 17, Friday to Sunday, at the University of Santo Tomas.
Fr. Jason Laguerta, head of the Office for the Promotion of New Evengelization, said the PCNE will try to go deeper into that aspect “of our lives as merciful Filipinos.”
“And it is a good reminder for us Filipinos, especially during the Jubilee Year of Mercy,” he said.
The PCNE is also recorded in the Vatican as among the official activities for the Holy Year of Mercy all over the world.
“In fact we are the only one in Asia endorsed (by the Vatican) as an official Jubilee activity for the year (of mercy),” Laguerta said. (Ysabel Nicole Hilado)
