(Fr. Eduardo Apungan, CMF) – VICE CHAIRMAN
A Franciscan missionary was elected as the new chairperson of the Association of Major Religious Superiors Men (AMRSMP) in the Philippines, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines said Friday, July 1.
The CBCP news site said Fr. Cielito Almazan, Minister Provincial of the Franciscan Province of San Pedro Bautista, will head the AMRSMP, which seeks to establish close collaboration among religious men.
Members of the 60-year-old group held its election during its convention of men superiors at Maryridge Retreat House in Tagaytay City from June 28 to July 1.
He succeeds acting chairman Fr. Gerard Francisco Timoner, who in turn succeeded Fr. Leo Dalmao. Dalmao was elected council member of the Claretian general government in Rome in September 2015.
“It seems that it is a statement that AMRSP men wish to look more deeply into the issues related to the environment since the Franciscans are known for that,” AMRSP executive secretary Fr. Dexter Toledo said.
Meanwhile, the group elected Claretian Provincial Superior Fr. Eduardo Apungan as its new Vice Chairperson.
Board members include: Br. Jose Mari Jimenez; Fr. Anthony Paul Bicomong; Fr. Copernicus Perez Jr.; Fr. Joseph Matitu; and Fr. Antonio Moreno.
Meanwhile, the AMRSP women chaired by Sr. Cecilia Bayona are to elect their new set of officers when they convene for their general assembly next week. MC
